About the name Terrella

Terrella - Latin for "Little Earth", was the name given to an experimental spherical lodestone by William Gilbert in his book De Magnete, the first great treatise in magnetism, published in 1600. Gilbert used the Terrella as the template for his explorations of the phenomena of magnetism, and in particular, the direction and characteristics of the earth’s magnetic lines of force and the nature of the earth as a giant magnet. In Gilbert’s words, the Terrella was "a natural little body endowed with a multitude of properties whereby many abstruse and unheeded truths of philosophy, hid in deplorable darkness, may be more readily brought to the knowledge of mankind."

Terella 6 V2-Heading & Motion Sensor Product

Like Gilbert’s Terrella, Clymer Technologies’ Terrella 6 heading and motion sensor (shown above) has a "multitude of properties" allowing it to fully describe its relationship to the earth’s magnetic field.

About the Terrella 6

The Terrella6 is a temperature compensated heading and motion sensor slightly larger than the diameter of a "AA" battery. The Terrella 6 measures the following qualities:

  • Heading
  • Orientation (Euler Angles: Roll, Pitch, Yaw)
  • Orientation (Quaternions)
  • Orientation (Rotation Matrix)
  • Translational Accelerations (3-axes)
  • Magnetic Field (3-axes)
  • Steady-State Temperature

With each 2 Terrellas we include: 1 Serial Cable, 1 Power Supply, 1 Adapter Board, Individual Test Data

Delivery: Stock to 6 Weeks

Warranty: Parts are warranted for 90 days, changes made to the cable by customers will violate the warranty.
